Thank you to all who attended, and who prayed.
This protest, which marks the anniversary of the 2002 ban on religious practices, has taken place for 16 years and is jointly organised by CSW, the Eritrean Orthodox Church in the UK, Church in Chains, Human Rights Concern Eritrea and Release Eritrea.
Our aim is simply to show solidarity with Eritreans who have been imprisoned on account of their faith.
Extraordinarily, this year we were met by a counter-protest organised by a pro-government group that sought and was granted permission at the last minute to hold an all-day protest. They claimed to be marking Eritrea’s Independence Day, but in reality, Eritrean Independence Day is on 24 May.
We look forward to a time when there's no need to protest. However, we will keep standing in solidarity with the church in Eritrea until every prisoner of conscience is released.
