The countdown has begun! On 8 November, Burma will go to the ballot box in its first reasonably free elections in 25 years. Although it’s great news to see progress towards a more democratic country, Burma still urgently needs your prayers.

Why pray for Burma?
The elections on 8 November are a positive step, but it’s just one step on a very long road. The political reforms introduced in 2011 by President Thein Sein in 2011 have ultimately failed to last: either stalling or even going backwards. Problems with the constitution mean that the leader of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi, can’t stand for the presidency. Meanwhile, growing Buddhist nationalism means that religious minorities, especially Muslims, are increasingly under threat.
What should I pray for?
The future of Burma
- Pray for the outcome of the election in Burma, that God would being His peace to this war-torn country.
- Pray that this election would bring about a Burma where people of all faiths and ethnicities are valued members of society.
- Thank God that these elections, a sign of democratic progress, are taking place.
Religious freedom
- Pray that this election will represent the voices of all citizens of Burma, whether they are Buddhist, Muslim or Christian.
- Pray for peace and reconciliation between Buddhists, Muslims and Christians in Burma.
- Pray that Burma’s Muslims would be recognised as full citizens.
Burma’s human rights record
- Pray that God would bring about an atmosphere of peace and tolerance in Burma instead of violence and hatred.
- Pray for protection for Burma’s religious minorities in the run up to the election.
- Pray for a peaceful transition to a new government.
Human rights defenders and activists
- Thank God for the tireless work of Burma’s human rights defenders and activists
- Ask God to keep them safe as they work to raise awareness of Burma’s restrictions on religious freedom
- Pray that their voices will be heard as Burma’s new government is formed
Prayer for election day
Heavenly Father,
Please watch over Burma on this election day. Give wisdom to the politicians and discernment to the voters. Please keep any vulnerable people safe in the face of an uncertain future. May these elections be the first step towards a more democratic Burma, and a Burma where everyone is free to live out their beliefs in freedom.
Thank you
Amen
