The Disappeared

Watch our short film on The Disappeared

Forced disappearance is one of the most devastating human rights violations, often used deliberately by governments and armed groups as a tool of fear and control. The disappearance of people leaves families and communities trapped in a cycle of uncertainty, trauma and grief.

With no confirmation of life or death, loved ones are denied closure and prolonged trauma. The psychological toll of the unknown is profound. Enforced disappearance sends a chilling message not just to the individual targeted, but to entire communities.

The case of Pastor Aaron Méndez is just one example of the cruelty of enforced disappearance. As a pastor running a migrant shelter along the Mexico - U.S. border, Méndez defended vulnerable Cuban migrants from being abducted by criminal groups. He and a colleague were taken and never seen again.

Their case, like many others, has gone largely un-investigated. Similar examples exist around the world – from North Korea to China, Nicaragua, Eritrea and Syria, where the forced disappearance of people has been used to silence voices and create fear.

Below are some ways that you can help people who have been disappeared or targeted for their beliefs around the world.

Together, we can show them that they are not forgotten.
