Special guest speakers

Ben Rogers, CSW East Asia Team Leader

Ben is the author of several books on Burma, including Burma: A Nation at the Crossroads (2012, Random House). He has visited Burma and its borderlands more than 40 times, has testified at hearings in the British Parliament, European Parliament, US Congress and spoken at conferences and in the media around the world.

Sarah Armitage, Partners UK National Director

Sarah is the UK National Director for Partners Relief & Development - an organisation dedicated to seeing free, full lives for children affected by conflict and oppression. She returned to England in 2009 after spending two years living and working on the Thai-Burma border with Partners overseeing the care of over 1,300 refugee and migrant children. She is now dedicated to increasing awareness of the situation for the oppressed and desperate people of Burma and raising income for Partners field programmes.

Wai Hnin Pwint Thon, Burma Campaign UK

Wai Hnin, originally from Burma, is the Campaigns Officer at Burma Campaign UK. Her job involves research on political prisoners, repressive laws, public speaking, media relations, UK parliamentary advocacy and international advocacy. Wai Hnin regularly appears in national and international media, including the BBC and CNN.  She has spoken at several meetings in the British Parliament and was invited by the former Foreign Secretary David Miliband to address the Labour Party Conference as one of their keynote speakers in 2010.

Panel members

David Burrowes MP for Enfield, Southgate

David was first elected as Member of Parliament in 2005 and is currently acting as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rt Hon Owen Paterson, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He is also the founder and Chairman of the Conservative Christian Fellowship and a trustee and active participant in his local church.

Hkanhpa Tu Sadan

Hkanhpa Tu Sadan is General Secretary of the Kachin National Council. He is one of the founding members of the exile Kachin political movement based in the UK but with branches across Europe, the USA and Asia.

FAQs

Do I have to pay to attend?

No, the event is free, but please register so we know how many people to expect.

Can I bring a friend along on the day?

We would love you to bring a friend. We would prefer it if they also signed up in advance, but they can also register on the day from 12.30pm.

When does the event start?

The event starts at 1pm (doors open at 12.30pm).

When will the event finish? 

We expect the event to finish at 4.30pm.

Is there parking?

There is limited parking on surrounding roads and a multi-story car park on Great College Street. You won't have to pay the congestion charge if you do decide to drive as it only applies on weekdays. Parking can be rather difficult in central London so we would recommend that you take public transport.

Will food or drinks be provided? 

No, you will need to purchase food during the lunch break or bring something from home. Make sure you bring a bottle of water to keep hydrated.

Where will I eat? 

There are a number of cafes very close to the Emmanuel Centre.

How do I register? 

You can register online above or alternatively you can register on the day (though we do prefer if you register online). If you don’t have access to the internet you can call the office on 0845 456 5464 and register by speaking to our events coordinator Heather Fenton.

Where is the event? 

The Burma Day of Prayer is being held at the Emmanuel Centre, 9-23 Marsham Street, London SW1P 3DW.

How do I get there?

The venue is within walking distance of St. James's Park and Westminster tube stations, several key bus routes, main line Victoria station. Please check your travel details online at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/  using the Emmanuel Centre postcode SW1P 3DW.

Can I bring people from my church?

Of course, please do! They will all need to complete a registration form.

Is there disabled access? 

Yes. If you require disabled access, or any other kind of help on the day, it can be provided but please let us know prior to the event so we can make suitable arrangements.
