Camp on Campus

What is Camp on Campus?

We want you to spend the night camping out at your university, raising awareness about the millions of refugees who have to live every day and night under canvas.

We’ll give you petitions for curious bystanders to sign, event tips and resources – all you need to do is get people to join you in sleeping under the stars!

We want you to camp right smack bang in the middle of your university. The idea is to pitch your tents where you can be seen and heard by as many as people as possible.

By taking part in Camp on Campus you’re showing your university, our government and the international community that the refugee crisis has not been forgotten – and action is desperately needed.

Why should I do it? Burma kids

What countries come to mind when you think of the refugee crisis? Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq? How about Burma? You may not know it, but the crisis in Burma is actually one of the most shocking humanitarian situations in the world. Two people groups in particular urgently need help: the Rohingya and the Kachin.

In 1982 the Rohingya people, most of whom are Muslim, were stripped of their Burmese citizenship. They are effectively being starved out of their country – 130,000 people have fled by boat, and at one point 7,000 were stranded at sea with no country willing to help.

At least 100,000 Kachin people – a predominantly Christian ethnic group – go to sleep in a refugee camp every night. Their homes have been destroyed and they can’t go back.

The Burmese government blocks aid to these ethnic groups, so humanitarian agencies aren’t able to give these desperate people the food, water or healthcare they so badly need.

We’re calling on the Burmese government to end the block on aid.

At least 100,000 people in Burma go to sleep in a refugee camp every night. By spending a night in a tent, you can draw attention to the crisis and demand that the Burmese government stops the block on aid.
